what is USB Car Charger

The best USB car charger for most people, and most devices, is Scosche’s USBC242M reVOLT dual ($13). We reached this conclusion after testing about 20 total chargers since this guide was created. Packed into this tiny charger is the capability to simultaneously charge two full-size tablets at full speed, which most models don’t have. It’s also able to differentiate between different devices to deliver the proper charging current to each, something not every charger can do—including the previous iteration of this model. While not the absolute smallest or most powerful charger we tested, it has the right balance of all the important features and a good price.
Although it is incredibly small, the reVOLT dual is not so tiny that it’s difficult to remove. It stood up to every device we threw at it, including multiple iPhones, iPads, a OnePlus One, and a Samsung Galaxy S5, charging each at full speed. Compared to the competition, it offers the best balance of power and price, and it comes from a reputable company. And the price of this multi-port charger is so low that there’s no reason to consider a single-port model.
The prevalence of smartphones, tablets, GPS units, and other electronic devices in the car—many of them powered via USB—means that having a readily available USB-charging source is a near necessity for many people. If you own a car, it’s worth having a dedicated USB charger that plugs into your car’s 12-volt accessory outlet (aka, the cigarette lighter for older folks).

Even if your car is recent enough to include a USB port for integrating music playback and phone calls with your car stereo, it can still be worth spending $15 or so for a dedicated charging device in order to get faster charging speeds. That’s because your car’s built-in USB port(s) usually put out only 1 amp of current, which is not enough to charge a tablet or even newer iPhones at full speed. If you’re running an app like Waze or Google Maps, using your car’s USB port may not charge your phone any faster than it uses power, so you can end up at your destination with the same battery level as when you got in the car. Even if you were to get full-speed charging from an integrated USB port, most cars have only one such port. It’s worth spending a few bucks to have an always-ready, high-speed charger, especially since it can let you charge two or more devices from a single accessory outlet—your family and friends will appreciate that..

Similarly, if you have a USB charger that you bought a couple years ago, it probably puts out only 1 amp. Upgrading will provide you with faster charge times and the capability to charge tablets and other high-current devices. The same goes if your charger has only a single USB port. We’re living in an multi-device age, so it makes sense to have multiple USB-charging ports.

However, if you just bought a USB charger that provides at least 2 amps from each of its ports, there’s no reason to upgrade. Though you’ll be able to charge your iPad Air slightly faster with our top pick, the difference isn’t big enough to spend more money right now.
Unlike Aukey’s CC-S1 Dual USB Car Charger, which we discuss below, the reVOLT isn’t so short that it’s difficult to remove. We were able to easily take it out when necessary, yet it’s still small enough that it’s not obtrusive. The reVOLT and CC-S1 are the two smallest chargers we tested, and the difference in length between the two is about the thickness of an iPhone 5. That extra bit of height is well worth it in terms of making it easier to remove the charger.

Compared to the cheapest charger we tested, a long-named model from iXCC, the Scosche model is a little more than double the price. In many product categories that would be a big deal, but we’re talking about $6 versus $13, and $13 is still crazy cheap for something you’re trusting to safely charge your pricy gadgets. We’d much rather pay a few more dollars for the reVOLT’s superior design and for the peace of mind we get from Scosche’s strong reputation.

We couldn’t find any independent, trustworthy reviews of USB car chargers, but at the time of this writing, Amazon.com shows 799 reviews of the USBC242M, with an average rating of 4.6 out of five stars; 81 percent of those reviews are five-star. In terms of bad reviews, 5.6 percent (45 reviews) give the USBC242M a single star, with the major complaints being DOA units, short-term failure, or the customer receiving the wrong product. The first two things are certainly problems when they happen, though Scosche’s one-year warranty should cover either, and a failure rate (if Amazon reviews are representative) of around 5 percent on a low-price piece of electronics is, unfortunately, not unusual. If the wrong model does come, Amazon will replace it it for free. (Alternatively, you can purchase directly from Scosche, though the price jumps to $25. We’d stick with Amazon, although Scosche has just introduced some iPhone-matching color options that are exclusive to its site right now.)
